Grayson Riverbend Restoration

Short Project Description:
The Grayson Riverbend Preserve Restoration Project is designed to:
- reestablish native riparian vegetation on 190 acres currently under cultivation,
- remove a private levee to reconnect 30 acres of floodplain to the river,
- replace one or two dilapidated culverts with two state-of-the-art water control structures to reconnect high-frequency overbank floods from the San Joaquin River to benefit anadromous fish rearing,
- retire consumptive water use to improve streamflow in the San Joaquin River,
- monitor the site to ensure effectiveness,
- coordinate project outcomes and investment closely with Stanislaus County’s Grayson Small Community Flood Risk Reduction Project immediately upstream, and
- transfer the property to federal ownership for inclusion and perpetual management within the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge which spans over 8,000 acres of floodplains immediately downstream.
